This is a good walk to do if you want to keep near to the village as it never actually gets more than a mile of two away.

Starting point: Carlton Corner Bed & Breakfast

Distance: 7 miles

Refreshments:

The Kings Head in Smeeton. The Swan, The Railway, The Coach & Horses all in Kibworth

Turn left outside the B&B, turn left at the junction then first right onto Marsh Drive.  Cross over the A6 and continue into the village by the Coach and Horses pub.  Follow the road past the church and over the railway bridge, when you get to the roundabout turn left then immediately right opposite The Swan pub.  Continue all the way down Weir Road and by the golf club at the end take the path to the right of the carpark.

At the end of the path cross 2 fields until you reach Debdale Lane.  Turn right on Debdale Lane and follow it until you reach the road in Smeeton Westerby.  Turn right on the road and then left up Mill Lane next to the Kings Head pub.  Follow Mill Lane for about a mile until you reach another road.

Cross the road (careful the traffic does go quite fast along here).  Cross the field following the sign.  After two fields go through the metal gate and into Millenium Woods.  Follow the path past the big rock until eventually you will see a bridge crossing the canal, don’t take this bridge, instead go over the little wooden plank bridge before to the left.  Follow the path until you reach a field, go round to the right and then immediately left following the path back up to the road.  Cross the road and follow the path until you reach the canal.  You are actually walking over Saddington tunnel (808m long).

Proceed down the tow path for about half a mile. You will eventually reach a long sweeping curve in the canal where the edges are paved with concrete, about half way along the curve you will see a style and a little marker (it is quite easy to miss).  Go through the style and turn right then cross the field.

Continue through two fields then over a stile and up a path between horse paddocks towards the houses. Walk through the houses until you reach a sign on the right to “pit hill”. Take the path through the allotments and at the end turn left and take the path on the left hand side of the church.  Walk through two fields and then through a path between houses.  At the lane go straight over and continue through several fields until you reach the recreational ground.  Go straight on and take the path finally emerging at the road next to the scout hut.  Cross the road and go straight on down Rosebery Avenue, at the T junction turn right and follow the road down the hill.  At the turn at the bottom of the hill take the path straight on over the tin bridge.

Take the path immediately to the right and at the end turn left and proceed up the park past the primary school.  Cross the road and continue on the path until you meet the A6.  Turn left and follow the road, just around the corner you’ll see a path on the other side of the road taking you to the right.

(On the left hand side you’ll see a great grass mount.  This is Kibworth Munt which was a Norman motte and bailey castle).

At the end of the path turn left and walk to the end of the road, turn right and proceed down the road where you will see Carlton Corner B&B on your left hand side.

Hope you enjoyed your walk!!
